The echo of your departed heart
wakes me from hollow dreams–
White sheets damp and cold
Lay plastered against my skin.
Memories drenched by tears,
Moments of clarity and loss.
I toss and turn, murmurs escape my lips
Against the steady beat of fan blades.
A summer day: your arms around mine,
Cool water, soft lips, and laughter.
Salt crusted eyes open to darkness,
Hands clenched in determined silence.
Hearts never forget the song of love,
They forever lie in wait.
