I stumbled up on this post at Catherynne’s blog on the cover art for her upcoming short story collection, Ventriloquism. The instant I saw it memories of University Art History courses filtered through my mind and landed on Bosch.
I love the whimsical characteristics and the earth tones in this painting. Isn’t it enchanting? The artist is Rimi Staines and she’s also an Etsian! I’m putting Ventriloquism on my TBR list and I think I’m going to make a wishlist for Rimi’s shop.
For those who are not familiar with author, Catherynne Valente:
Catherynne M. Valente was born on Cinco de Mayo, 1979 in Seattle, WA, but grew up in in the wheatgrass paradise of Northern California. She graduated from high school at age 15, going on to UC San Diego and Edinburgh University, receiving her B.A. in Classics with an emphasis in Ancient Greek Linguistics. She then drifted away from her M.A. program and into a long residence in the concrete and camphor wilds of Japan.
She currently lives in Maine with her partner, two dogs, and three cats, having drifted back to America and the mythic frontier of the Midwest.
Valente is the author of The Palimpest and the popular online novel, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making – as well as several other books. She is an author I’ve been wanting to read for the last year, but for various reasons haven’t. I hope to change that soon!
OOH, thanks for the recommendation—her work sounds right up my alley. I love the cover art too—was always fascinated by Bosch in art history class.
I have The Orphan’s Tale sitting on my tbr read stack…well actually it is sitting on my “already started but it hasn’t fit my mood” stack. It seems interesting and I think I’ll enjoy it when I get into it but I don’t think I’ll be reading Palimpsest since based on what I’ve heard, it may not be a book for me. That’s ok though, I have lots of others. 🙂
I have some books like that, ones I start reading and know I’ll enjoy but I’m just not in the right mind frame yet. I think I’m going to start with the free online book, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making and see how I feel about her writing.
